Our Programs

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa serves children ages 6-14 by providing them with a professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationship. Once matched, children can stay in our program until they are 18.

Matches are made through our three primary mentoring programs:

Community Based Mentoring:
For as little as four hours per month, Bigs and Littles spend time together in their community sharing fun activities, stories, and a little bit of themselves.

School Based Mentoring:
Bigs and Littles meet once a week at school to talk and have fun. It’s not about being a tutor. It’s about being a friend.

Mentoring Children of Prisoners (MCP):
This program is a special extension of our Community Based program, developed to meet the unique needs of children with incarcerated parents. Research has shown that children with incarcerated parents have a 70% chance of being incarcerated, unless they have a positive intervention.

How a Big Becomes a Big (and a Little a Little)
To ensure we make the best match possible, our professionally trained staff works with individuals up front in a careful interview and background check process. Matches are made based on location, personalities and preferences. Support is provided by our staff all along the way, so that matches can grow into lasting friendships.

What Bigs and Littles Do
Getting together is a great time for both Bigs and Littles. It doesn’t require a special occasion or expensive acitivites - just a few hours every month sharing simple things you already enjoy with a young person. Things like:

• Shooting hoops

• Playing a board game

• Sharing a pizza

• Taking a walk in the park

• Or just hanging out and talking
