Ottumwa Area Big Brothers Big Sisters
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ottumwa provides mentors to children in the community who are in need of a supportive role model. Serving children in both the Ottumwa and Oskaloosa areas, the organization offers two mentoring programs through which individuals can get involved: Community Based Mentoring and School Based Mentoring.
Thanks to the support of the Ottumwa community, Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mentoring programs have grown from serving 6 children in 2003, to more than 200 children in 2007.

Oskaloosa School Based Art and Enrichment Program
Twenty-five children attended our free Oskaloosa Fine Arts Day on Thursday, June 14th and will continue with our ongoing SB program throughout the summer on Thursday afternoons. Artists John Jannenga, Dan Coffey, Mark Dempster, Mary Alspaugh, and Jim Givan taught the workshops in drawing, photography, collage, quilting and painting to BBBS children. As a follow up to our Fine Arts Day workshop, we are continuing with an ongoing art project entitled, “What Makes Our community Special?,” which the children will complete while working with artist Jim Givan throughout the rest of the summer. Filmmakers Mike Saunders and Jason Bolinger are recording the project and completing a 15 minute mini-documentary to record the experience of the children in our program. The finished piece of art work will be presented to the Oskaloosa Elementary School for display.
